This week in the Civil War: Nov. 30, 1864

Battle of Franklin, Tennessee

Confederate Gen. John Bell Hood led his troops in pursuit of a Union army across Tennessee in this week 150 years ago in the Civil War. The two foes met up on Nov. 30, 1864, at Franklin, Tenn., near Nashville, where Union forces dug in along a defensive line just outside the community. Fierce fighting erupted as Hood led an assault on Union defensive positions. Although two federal units crumpled, the Union positions largely held despite much bloodletting that left more than 8,000 troops wounded, dead or missing. The casualties hit especially hard at Hood's forces, which withdrew bloodied and bruised after the Union victory.

Feeling Thankful, Too

Momma was inspired (Inspired, I say!) to make a Thanksgiving outfit this week.

The first turned out so well it sold immediately!

"Feeling Thankful, Too" is cobbled (gobbled?) together with scraps left over from the first Thanksgiving dress - making it even more asymmetrical!

"Feeling Thankful, Too" has an attached pocket/purse fastened with a mini copper safety pin that contains a wee holiday surprise! Three working buttons fasten the bodice back. It comes with a coordinating (exposed) Flint corn (AKA Indian corn or calico corn) fabric-trimmed petticoat, and a copper pumpkin necklace.

Skirmishing in Tennessee

Confederate Gen. John Bell Hood led forces from northern Alabama into Tennessee on a major incursion 150 years ago this week in the Civil War. Hood was intent on taking Nashville but Union forces swiftly swung into defensive positions near Columbia, Tennessee — south of Nashville. The Union fighters entrenched by erecting earthen works at Columbia. A series of skirmishes and military maneuvers followed between Nov. 24 and 29, 1864, as federal troops slowed Hood on his march toward Nashville, the Tennessee state capital. Eventually both armies would march on to clash in other locations in Tennessee.

This week in the Civil War: Nov. 16, 1864

Sherman's March to the Sea
Union forces had occupied Atlanta for more than two months when Union Gen. William Sherman departed in mid-November 1864 on the so-called March to the Sea — a campaign to capture Savannah, Georgia. As Sherman's federal forces advanced, the troops destroyed buildings, businesses, and property in their path, a "scorched earth" policy that angered and also demoralized Southerners. Sherman split his roughly 60,000 troops into two wings and the two groups kept miles apart as they crossed Georgia, raiding farms and plantations and occasionally clashing with Confederates along the route.

This Week in the Civil War: Nov. 9, 1864

Lincoln’s re-election trumpeted by Northern newspapers

Union states patiently awaited final ratification this week of President Abraham Lincoln’s re-election 150 years ago in the Civil War. The New York Herald, a day after the voting concluded in November 1864, trumpeted: “The Result of the Great National Contest. ABRAHAM LINCOLN RE-ELECTED PRESIDENT.” The newspaper reported voting proceeded calmly despite rain in many Union states and that based on early vote tallies, Lincoln’s re-election was at hand. The Associated Press reported Lincoln was serenaded by well-wishers from Pennsylvania a day after the vote, delivering a speech from a window stating he had worked “for the best interests of the country and the world, not only for the present, but for all future ages.” He added that he would abide by the outcome once it had been duly ratified.

Inspiring imagination

Momma and I are proud to reveal Momma's contribution for the upcoming Dolls for a Cause auction benefitting Kids Need to Read.

(Please forgive the quality of the photographs, but Momma was in a terrible rush.)

Founded by Nathan Fillion, Kids Need to Read works to create a culture of reading for children by providing inspiring books to underfunded schools, libraries, and literacy programs across the United States, especially those serving disadvantaged children.

The inspiration for Momma's donation came from one of Momma's favorite books. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a children's novel written by L. Frank Baum and illustrated by W. W. Denslow. Originally published on May 17, 1900, it has been described as the original American fairy tale.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has since been reprinted many times, most often under the name The Wizard of Oz, which is the name of the well-known 1939 moving picture.

"Dorothy had only one other dress, but that happened to be clean and was hanging on a peg beside her bed. It was gingham, with checks of white and blue; and although the blue was somewhat faded with many washings, it was still a pretty frock. The girl washed herself carefully, dressed herself in the clean gingham, and tied her pink sunbonnet on her head. She took a little basket and filled it with bread from the cupboard, laying a white cloth over the top. Then she looked down at her feet and noticed how old and worn her shoes were.

"At that moment Dorothy saw lying on the table the silver shoes that had belonged to the Witch of the East.

"She took off her old leather shoes and tried on the silver ones, which fitted her as well as if they had been made for her."

Based upon the original book description and illustrations, this auction includes:

  • Dorothy's faded blue gingham dress
  • white petticoat
  • pink sunbonnet
  • silver shoes  (purchased)
  • mini basket and and a white cloth
  • loaf of bread (by Pippaloo)
  • The Wonderful Wizard of Oz paperback (purchased)
  • miniature copy of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by American Girl
  • Susan Winget red poppies storage box (purchased)
  • Toto, too!
  • buttons and bookmarks from Kids Need to Read

A pair of ruby shoes (purchased) is also included to honor the 75th anniversary of the epic 1939 movie!

Everything will be carefully packed in a collectable red poppy box before being packed inside another box for mailing.

The auction starts on Nov. 9, 2014 and ends Nov. 16, 2014.

Happy bidding!

This week in the Civil War: Nov. 2, 1864

Lincoln re-elected

Buoyed by a series of military successes, Abraham Lincoln was re-elected president this week 150 years ago in the Civil War. Lincoln defeated Gen. George B. McClellan, who got into politics in the years after Lincoln sacked him from his military command for a cautious approach to the early Union war effort. McClellan campaigned on an anti-war platform but the Union’s military successes late in 1864, including the capture of Atlanta, swayed many voters on Nov. 8, 1864, to hand him a second term. Many Union soldiers voted by absentee ballot from the field.

Winona and her friends

We also have Betsy-Tacy and Tib's friend Winona, but she's an unaltered American Girl #25 wearing Addy's stilting outfit.

(Winona's a bit smug that she's the only unaltered girl in the group.)

The dress is a bit long for the period but since Winona's a tomboy and loves bright colors such as red and purple so it seems appropriate for her.

Momma got Winona a little pug to be her faithful companion, Toodles.
