Dear Addie is written by Steampunk Addie and was founded by her Momma. It is the most popular column in the world (or at least it should be) -- known for its uncommon sense and youthful perspective.
Thankfully, I don't seem prone to what you might call "Jet lag." I believe that to be due to the fact that while I am moving through time I always arrive on the new date at the same time that I left. For example: if I leave 1864 Philadelphia at 9:22 a.m., I arrive in 2012 Phoenix at 9:22 a.m. and vice versa. I just have to plan accordingly if there is a specific event I want to witness.
And since you didn't ask, I don't get headaches when traveling by dirigible either since the speed is so slow my body has plenty of time to adjust.
I did switch my WABAC Machine to "whatever" once ... and got the stuffing scared out of me. (Momma can attest that I am several ounces lighter now.) As you might ascertain, I don't scare easily. I now try to be a bit more prudent in my date selections.
HOWEVER, if I can install a dead man's switch (not to be taken literally, of course!) that will ensure my safety upon arrival I shall certainly do so again.
And finally, no I have not seen King Tut ... yet. Thanks for the suggestion though!
But why walk like an Egyptian when you can dance? "Dancin' by the Nile, (Disco Tut)"
There seems to be some debate, but according to the University of North Dakota website:
"Dr. Paolo Conte was born in Palermo, Italy on Feb. 29, 1890 to Gaetano and Clorinda Conte. His musical talents were demonstrated at age 4, when he was heard improvising on the piano. He received his musical education in Venice, where he was a student of Tagliapietra, Wolf-Ferrari, and Busoni. He earned a master's degree in psychology and his doctorate in musicology from the University of Padua. In August 1914, Dr. Conte came to UND to teach piano and composition at Wesley College.
"Dr. Paolo Conte died in Colorado Springs on Sept. 11, 1966 at age 76. His compositions number in the hundreds and have been used in teaching, radio, and movies.
"The Paolo Conte Papers were deposited in the Orin G. Libby Manuscript Collection as a gift of William R. Conte (Paolo Conte's son), Olympia, WA on July 15, 1994. Additional deposits were made by Mary Margaret Frank, Grand Forks, North Dakota on April 9, 1996, and by William Conte on June 29, 1998."
Also, while spending a year in Europe in 1914, Maud Hart Lovelace met Paolo Conte (who later inspired the character Marco in "Betsy and the Great World"). Conte proposed to Lovelace while she was living in Venice, but she rejected him. He moved to the U.S. to head the conservatory at UND. Conte wrote the score for the first academy-award winning film - Wings. The book has photographs of Conte. Details about her life and work can be found in The Betsy-Tacy Companion by Sharla Whalen.
Hi! I'm one of your relatives (I think...) I'm Addy, too. But I spell it with a "Y". Personally, I like to be called Aduke...my mom's kinda formal. Anyway, she was wondering how to take care of my hair, since it's textured and very long. My "sisters" are Kit and Ruthie, and their hair is shorter and easier to take care of. If you had any thoughts, we would both greatly appreciate it (she wants my hair to look better for family photos and I just want her off my back!)
Yes, ou hair can be hard to manage. When combing it out, Momma takes a small section (about a pinch or an inch) wets it down with a a spray bottle, and starting on the ends starts combing it out with a metal pick (not a brush). As each end gets detangled she moves up another inch or two and repeats until she reaches my scalp. Then she gets a new small section and repeats until done.
When she is done I usually wear my hair in a braid or a snood so we don't need to repeat any more than necessary!
My name is Storm and I love steampunk stuff but my friend (owner) doesn't know where to find it cheap as possible could you recommend anywhere that sells steampunk stuff 18inch size or does how tos/ patterns? (it would be even better if the patterns were free!)
While I know of know free steampunk patterns, all you really need is imagination and creativity. The hardware store is my favorite place for accessories, such as my hoseclamps, chains, etc. If you go to JoAnns or Michaels look for Tim Holtz or 7 Gypsies in the scrapbook area. They have GREAT items that are steampunky.

I, of course, can also be a source of inspiration for you and Your Friend.
I'm "Pepsi", Kit's sister, I was wondering if you watch a Disney channel show called Gravity Falls and if you could go there? I am rather curious. - Pepsi
Oh, I might meet Dipper and Mabel someday. I've now watched one show and quite enjoyed it. However, I do not "hunt" anything. I do like to go looking for supernatural creatures though.
Dear Addie, It would be AWESOME if you could go on Aoshima and ride on him :p -Pepsi p.s. have anyways of getting rid of older fashion-obsessed doll sisters who insist upon smearing make up on your face?
Err, I must admit I have no desire to ride Aoshima at this point in time. That thing is the stuff of sugar-induced nightmares! However, I do reserve the right to change my mind.
As for your older fashion-obsessed doll sisters who insist upon smearing make up on your face, tell them to BACK OFF. At our age, we have no need for cosmetics. In fact, makeup in 1864 was considered to be improper, vulgar, and acceptable only for actors.
Dear Addie, I'd like to join your steam team, I admit I'm not very steampunk, I'm more future-y, I believe I could be of some use to you, I have a Gameboy with time traveling and somewhat hypnotizing properties. PLEASE? -Pepsi
Yes, my hair is very hard to brush! Momma usually picks it then puts it either in my snood or a braid. Both styles keep it from tangling. As for cookies, my favorite is an imported malted milk biscuit. Perfect for tea dueling!
Our doll Trekkie and Steampunk enthusiast (Marie-Grace) wants to know what your favorite Star Trek series is. She also wants to know who your favorite character from Star Trek and whether you prefer Kirk or Picard. Finally Marie-Grace asks: Have you ever considered cosplaying as Guinan?
Momma and I are loyal to TOS, but we like Next Generation, too. My favorite characters are Spock, Uhura, and Guinan. Loyalty compels me to say Kirk, but I think Picard was a better captain. And YES, I want to cosplay Guinan! Momma is developing a pattern for me - maybe two! We love Guinan's trademark look in Ten Forward, but we also love her Victorian outfit in the episode, "Time's Arrow."
Awesome! Time's Arrow is one of Marie-Grace's favorite episodes. Isn't Mark Twain fabulous? We will be watching for the Guinan cosplay- whichever one you choose!
Hey Addie, Quick question, who are the dolls in your vinyl family? I mean, I know that there is you, Caroline, Phoebe, Clementine, and Princess Buffy, but who else? Or is that it?
Don't take offense to this, but, do you like country music? You know, Toby Keith, Rodney Atkins, the works. Because if you do, I think I found a band for you! (Ha! That rhymed.) It is called "The Band Perry" look it up sometime.
Unfortunately, it has nothing to do with Perry the Platypus. But I think you'd like some of the songs like, "You Lie," "If I Die Young," or "Better Dig Two."
(You don't have to publish this) But for the summer, I had to do some special learning stuff with my dolls (I think you heard about Pepsi and Kitty) and I did a report on you! Would you like to se it?
Hey Addie, Have you ever heard of Poptropica? It is a really fun game created by authors, they even have a steampunk island! I thought you might be interested.
Hey Addie, have you ever heard or seen "Don't Hug Me I'm Scared"? They have 2 music videos on time and creativity, (It may be a bit scary, but watch it 500000 more times and the affect wears off)
Did you see the new gravity falls? I mean, you have to see how this, http://doafhat.tumblr.com/post/97019373058 http://thespoonmissioner.tumblr.com/post/97024963050 http://paatticake.tumblr.com/image/97025303055 http://frolic-chronis.tumblr.com/post/97025834536 somehow has a context.
Dear Addie, How did you get that little picture at the top of your blog. I can't seem to figure out how? P.S. Can you follow my blog and put it on your reading list I really need some followers for my blog because it is small. I don't mean to nag you or anything though.
Oh and by the way Addie my blogs address is itsjuliesworld.blogspot.com. Hey have you ever heard of the Star Wars movies? They are amazing, you NEED to watch them1
Dear Addie,
ReplyDeleteDo time travelers get headaches from all the sudden switches in time?
Do you ever just switch the time machine on "whatever" to be surprised by your destination?
Did you get to see King Tut on your last visit to Egypt???? If not, will you go back and visit him? You could learn how to WALK LIKE AN EGYPTIAN!!!!
Thanks for the answers,
You newest and bestest fan.... Mama Lisa

-Kit K.
Hi Kit, I sure can! Just send some good photos to me at steampunkaddie@gmail.com and tell me where you want to go.

ReplyDeleteI'd like to go to the distant future with you, sort of a star-trek idea, can I?
From your new friend,

ReplyDeleteGravity Falls? Or Oz? Oz is my first destination choice but I do like Gravity Falls, too.
DeleteDear Miss Addie,
ReplyDeleteIs your hair hard to brush? Does it tangle often? And what's your favorite type of cookie?
Sincerely, C.

ReplyDeleteI am shocked, appalled, and horrified. I predicted Addy, and I'm relieved she's safe (for now) but retiring Ivy and Cecile?
