On the eighth day of Christmas
My true love gave to me
Eight maids-a-milking
Seven swans-a-swimming, six geese-a-laying
Five golden rings, four calling birds
Three French hens, two turtle doves
And a partridge in a pear tree.
The hymn that became known as "Amazing Grace," then titled "1 Chronicles 17:16–17" is first used to accompany a sermon led by former slaver John Newton on Jan. 1, 1773 in the town of Olney, England.
Amazing grace! (how sweet the sound)
That sav'd a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
