Time meant nothing

We did it! We saw "Little" Nell Campbell (Columbia), Patricia Quinn (Magenta), and Barry Bostwick (Brad) at Phoenix Comicon 15 today - and they loved us! 

Little Nell loved us so much she took our photos to post on her Instagram page!

I was dressed as Columbia in the Time Warp sequence:

• Gold sequined top hat with black hatband. 
• Gold sequined tailcoat with black sequined shawl lapels. 
• Pink bow
• Black dog collar with rhinestones.
• Sequined bustier.
• Black cotton sateen shorts with ribbon stripes.
• Seamed fishnet pantyhose.
• Light blue boot cuffs
• Black tap boots

Clementine wore Columbia's pajamas from the Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch Me scene: 

• Seersucker men's white/blue striped pajamas.
• Black plastic Mickey Mouse ears on black felt cap 
• Open-toed black mules.

We had our photos taken with them which I'll post later this week.

Oh, and we also saw Summer Glau (River in Firefly and Serenity) who signed Clementine, and Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy!) who ignored me but signed a photo for Momma. Author Naomi Novik signed a couple of books - including my little autograph book!

Sadly, we only saw Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones), Karl Urban (Star Trek), and Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future) from a distance. We were broke.

Yippee! Phoenix Comicon 15 officially opened today!

Momma has been busily working on our new cosplay outfits (Clementine and I are wearing two different Columbia outfits from The Rocky Horror Picture Show in honor of her PHXCC appearance) and she is exhausted. She said it's harder to get us ready than it is to get ready herself!

We'll also be wearing:

• Firefly in honor of Summer Glau
• Hogwarts in honor of Jason Isaacs
• Star Trek in honor of Karl Urban
• ... and my Super Suit just because it's awesome!

I am Dreadfully sorry for my long internet absence, but things have been Frightfully busy lately.

Not least of which is getting ready for Phoenix Comicon 15 this weekend!

This week I intend to feature some of the Comicon guests Momma, Clementine, and I are most excited about.

Clementine is especially excited about meeting Summer Glau, better known as River Tam in Firefly and the feature film, Serenity.

Summer Glau is an American prima ballerina and actress, who is best known for for her iconic characters River Tam in Joss Whedon's TV series Firefly and the feature film, Serenity and Cameron Philips in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Summer got her start in Joss Whedon's much acclaimed TV series Angel playing a cursed Prima Ballerina in the 2002 episode "Waiting in the wings." Contributing to her Sci Fi credit were roles in USA's The 4400 as Tess, a Schizophrenic that can control others with her mind and followed it with a return to the Whedonverse in Dollhouse as Echo's long lost nemesis, Bennet Halverson.

2010 saw Summer fulfilling two lifelong dreams by starring in both a Lifetime movie Deadly Honeymoon, and filming a Western The Legend of Hells Gate: An America Conspiracy. Summer revisited TV screens in 2011 in NBC's highly anticipated The Cape as Orwell, an investigative blogger who teams up with Vince/The Cape in order to fight crime and restore justice. Most recently Summer did an impressive guest appearance on Alphas. And, it has just been announced that she will now be seen in the CBS TV pilot Scent of the Missing as Sedona with Tricia Helfer.

First Kaylee (Jewel Staite) in 2013, then Captain Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) in 2014, and now River!

This week in the Civil War: July 6, 1864

The Battle That Saved Washington, D.C.

Some 15,000 Confederate troops under the command of Jubal Early* surged northward into Maryland in the summer of 1864, reaching the outskirts of Frederick, Md., hoping to slide around toward the lightly defended nation's capital. The Confedreate surge northward came amid a bid by Robert E. Lee to pressure Washington, D.C., even as the Union was plunging deep into Virginia. But Northern railroad agents, detecting the Confederate incursion, quickly alerted federal authorities. By July 9, 1864, the rival sides were battling each other fiercely along the Monocacy River in Maryland, the Union throwing some 5,800 fighters into the fray. It would be the final time the Confederates took the battle to the North. "INVASION!!" a headline in the Philadelphia Inquirer blared. "EXCITING NEWS FROM WASHINGTON. THE NATIONAL CAPITAL IN DANGER." Fighting raged for hours that day, but the Union pressure on the Confederates gave the Union time to reinforce defenses around the nation's capital. The fight subsequently became known as the "Battle That Saved Washington." And an Associated Press, in a dispatch July 12, 1864, confirmed the Confederates had been driven out of Frederick, Maryland. One smaller outcome, AP noted, Frederick residents complained hungry rebel foraging parties had rounded up their livestock and horses. "At times the main streets of Frederic were literally filled with horses and cattle, all of which were driven down to the fords and sent across into Virginia," AP noted.


*Did you know that actor Nathan Fillion says he is a descendent of General Jubal Early? In the final episode of Fillion's short-lived series Firefly, "Objects in Space,"  the bounty hunter was named Jubal Early after Fillion's ancestor. Early was played by Richard Brooks (who is, ironically, an African-American).

The upcoming Phoenix Comicon 14 is shaping into a Doozy.

Not only are actor Nathan Fillion (swoon!) and author Charlaine Harris scheduled to appear, but now the cast of the 1960s television classic, Batman!

That's right kids, Adam West, Burt Ward, and Julie Newmar are scheduled to be there!

Batman was a 1960s American live action television series that aired on the ABC network for three seasons from Jan. 12, 1966 to March 14, 1968.  It was based upon the DC comic book character and starred West as Batman, Ward as Robin, and Newmar as Cat Woman.

I hope they like my Super Suit!

Clementine has decided what she wants to wear when she meets Captain Malcolm Reynolds, I mean Nathan Fillion, at Phoenix Comicon.

She wants Momma to make her a Firefly-inspired dress from Melody Valerie Couture's Ardith pattern.

Captain Reynolds hurt Kaylee's feelings in the Firefly episode "Shindig." To apologize, he bought her a fancy pink dress she wanted and took her to a party.

And now Clementine wants her own version.

Clementine is in a dither and, I must admit, I am not much better.

It was announced today that Nathan Fillion is a scheduled guest for Phoenix Comicon.

Swoon!

For those poor souls who don't know who he is, Fillion is an actor best known for his role as Richard Castle on the television series Castle, as well as Captain Malcolm Reynolds in both the television series Firefly and its moving picture sequel, Serenity.

Clementine loves both Firefly and Serenity and got actress Jewel Staite's autograph last year at Phoenix Comicon. (I do Star Trek and she does Firefly.)

Not only is he a hilarious actor (who really is ruggedly handsome), but in 2007 Fillion co-founded the non-profit organization Kids Need to Read with author PJ Haarsma.

What's not to like?

Now please excuse me. Clementine and I only have two-and-a-half months to get ready for our photo op with Fillion.

You've seen the stunning Steampunk Star Trek outfit Dacia made me, but she added a "few" more T-shirts into the trade. 

Woo hoo!

Meanwhile we are trying to decide what to wear first. Any suggestions?

I'm a dork-able

What a whirlwind four days.

Talk about blissfully exhausted.

Phoenix Comicon 13 was a blast. In its 13 years it has grown from 400 attendees in one day to more than 30,000 in four days.

Phoebe and I met Star Trek actress Nichelle Nichols, who signed us and loved us so much she asked for her very own version of Me. (I, of course, graciously agreed.)

We met Wil Wheaton (again) who signed my Li'l Wil and rolled his eyes at my peacebonded knife and leg. (Apparently Wheaton still does not realize what a threat I am!)

Clementine met Jewel Staite, the ship's mechanic Kaylee Frye on Firefly and Serenity, who signed her tummy.

We also go to say hi to Kristin Bauer who plays the vampire Pam on True Blood.

We attended workshops and panels, met authors and illustrators, and watched people in all kinds of costumes.

(Not to mention hundreds of booths filled with geeky goodness.)

I have hundreds of photos to edit and share, but the internet is being g-l-a-c-i-a-l so I'll share them tomorrow.

Of course there will be more to report this week, but for now it is time for us to rest.

The future is worth fighting for

Clementine and I have been having a lot of fun getting to know one another and share our stories.
 
As you know, Clementine is from 1881 Tombstone, Ariz., but she's also an avid time and space traveler.

Specifically, she's a proud member of the Firefly-class spaceship, Serenity.

Five hundred years in the future there's a whole new frontier, and the crew of the Firefly-class spaceship Serenity is eager to stake a claim on the action. They'll take any job, legal or illegal, to keep fuel in the tanks and food on the table. But things get a bit more complicated after they take on a passenger wanted by the new totalitarian Alliance regime. Now they find themselves on the run, desperate to steer clear of Alliance ships and the flesh-eating Reavers who live on the fringes of space.

Firefly premiered in the United States on Sept. 20, 2002, but was canceled after 11 episodes. Despite the series' relatively short life span, it received strong sales when it was released on DVD and has large fan support campaigns.

The post-airing success of the show led to a 2005 film, Serenity, based on the series. The Firefly franchise expanded from the series and film to other media including comics and a role-playing game.

Personally, I think Clementine looks like a young Zoe Alleyne Washburne—second-in-command of the Serenity.
